A reflection on directing No More for Ceejay, and the discipline of keeping a short visual piece connected to its artist and song.

No More is a Ceejay video published in 2022, with my direction alongside Arian Romal’s music and production. Maximum Risk Entertainment is credited as the music label. It belongs to the earlier music-video projects that I want to include when I tell the story of my work over these years.

I am interested in how a video finds its own focus. A song can invite many images, but that does not mean all of them belong in the same piece. My ambition as a director is to give the audience a clear relationship to the artist, so the visual work has an identity they can stay with.

The day behind the film

The track is the starting point for deciding how the visual work should behave. I want to understand what the artist is offering before deciding how much the production needs to add. A performance can be strengthened by a setting or a visual contrast, but it can also be weakened if the surroundings constantly demand more attention than the person.

For me, focus means returning to a practical question: what is the viewer meant to understand or feel at this moment? The answer might involve a face, a gesture, a change in the image or simply staying with a performance long enough for its presence to register. It does not always involve a larger production statement.

An individual shot is only part of the film's language. Its meaning changes according to what comes before and after it. A director needs to think about that relationship while creating material, because the edit cannot always invent the connection that a production never supplied.

I want the images to offer enough continuity that the audience can stay with the piece, and enough difference that each return feels intentional. That balance is not created by a formula. It depends on how the performance, the music and the available visual material support one another.

Revisiting No More is also a reminder to acknowledge the people around a project. The song, artist, production and direction are related contributions, not interchangeable credits. I want the journal to make that work more visible, while giving the reader a better sense of the questions I bring to the camera.
